Japanese Teishoku Pop-up Dinner at 2293 Mission St., San Francisco USA

Tonkatsu (Fried Pork Cutlet) with egg and sauce: with rice, miso soup, pickled cucumber, and cold mix-veggies over tofu (Tamago was supposed to be in that empty bowl...) $18

What do traditional Japanese meal tasted like? I am glad I was introduced to a Japanese Teishoku Pop-up Dinner in San Francisco tonight. Teishoku means "meal set" and typically includes items like rice, miso soup, a main dish, side dish and pickled vegetables. It's simple dishes, but was prepared with great care. Let me tell you how the dinner went!

I first heard of the dinner pop-up from a friend (Jason), and immediately reserved the meal. The meal ticket was $18 per person, and was sold out instantly.

What I noticed that the restaurant serves very small amount of customers, about 30-40 people tonight. In return, chefs can maintain their food quality and waiters can always make sure their customer are happy with water, food, or answering questions.

I ordered Chicken Kara-age, a fried chicken dish. The meal includes rice, miso soup, pickled cucumber, salad, and seasoned green beans. It is such a great experience to enjoy delicious simple dishes that are well-prepared. The chicken is tender inside and semi-crispy on the outside. It is good by itself, but the dipping sauce definitely adds more depth. I particularly love the salad with sesame dressing.

I also tried some Nan-ban chicken, which has some really delicious fresh tartar sauce on top. $18
My friend's Tonkatsu with egg and sauce $18
The restaurant that came to do this dinner pop-up is called Yayoi, which will open their new Palo Alto location in Winter 2015. I am sure Yelp will keep you more update than me: http://www.yelp.com/biz/yayoi-palo-alto

From what I researched, Yayoi is actually a Japanese restaurant franchise under a corporation named PLENUS. Yayoi restaurants can be found in Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Thailand, Singapore, and Australia.

If you have tried Yayoi at other locations, feel free to leave a comment below!
